A Bad day on the Independence...

When an aircraft prepares to launch off an aircraft carrier, a JBD, or Jet Blast Deflect raises behind the departing aircraft to protect the flight deck from its blast. Due to the heat produced by after burning engines like the Tomcat, the JBD needed to be equipped with water tubes to cool the surface. One unfortunate fact is, Cat 4 on Forrestal Class Carriers were not equipped with water tubes, and were only used for launching aircraft such as the A-6, or A-7s...but during a launch of an F-14, the JBD needed to be left down.

On this day, the JBD was left down, and unfortunately for the crew of this Tomcat, they strayed right into the Jet Blast of an after burning F-14, and quickly got blown over the edge of the USS Independence (CV-62)

Not the best way to start your flight...thankfully no lives were lost that day.
