Virtual Reality Oculus Rift vrs Project Morpheus

VR TechnologiesA recent article came out comparing two products to hit the store shelve soon. Oculus Rift which we know well from Hoove's experiences, and the newly annouced Sony Project Morpheus aimed at the console market. These technologies will certainly be the next quantum leap forward in simulation.

Oculus Rift acquired by Facebookcould be a very big play in the VR market and speed development to the consumer.

The knee jerk reaction of the internet to this news, while not surprising, does cast a shadow onto what has been considered the future of gaming. Some developers, like Notch, (Minecraft) have already dismissed the OR due to Facebook's involvement. Will other developers follow suit when the people they were marketing to no longer support the product they were developing on?

Project Morpheus looks promising, but I worry, that being a Sony product, it will be really expensive and closed off to PC gamers.

There is another option though called Cast AR. It is primarily an augmented reality device which projects a stereo image from the glasses to inexpensive reflective material. According to the developers, it would be possible to build a cheap, all encompassing cockpit with 1 to 1 headtracking. The advantage of augmented reality over virtual reality is being able to still see your controllers, keyboard, ect. If you need virtual reality they are also developing a clip on device to capture the image and return it to the wearers eye.
